High cholesterol and strokeThere is a strong relation between high cholesterol and stroke. Elevated cholesterol can make you susceptible to a stroke. If you have high cholesterol, you need to make a plan with your doctor to return your cholesterol to normal levels and reduce your risk for heart diseases including stroke. Cholesterol is a fatty lipid that acts as a building block for cell membranes and the production of Vitamin and hormones in the body. While the liver produces most of the cholesterol the body needs, animal-based foods also contain cholesterol. If you eat too many foods with high cholesterol, stroke and other conditions could result. When your levels of bad low-density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol are too high, it can lead to a condition known as atherosclerosis. Excess LDL cholesterol builds up in the walls of your arteries, which is known as plaque. The plaque buildup makes it harder for blood vessels to flow through these arteries. If the flow of blood is interrupted to the brain, a person could have a stroke, or a sudden loss of brain function. This is the connection between high cholesterol and stroke. Another complication of high cholesterol and stroke comes from triglycerides. High levels of triglycerides in the bloodstream can cause blood clots. In combination with clogged arteries caused by high cholesterol, stroke is a potential result. There are several actions you can do to prevent high cholesterol and stroke. Stop smoking at once, as this will increase your cholesterol level. Getting exercise daily is also very important. Exercise can lower your cholesterol and help to break up blood clots that could lead to stroke. Finally, you should switch to a healthy diet with many fruits, vegetables and whole grains and limited amounts of lean meat and fish. You need to take these steps toward greater health in order to avoid high cholesterol and stroke. |
