Managing Cholesterol

Managing cholesterol is very important to maintain good health over the long term. While the body needs cholesterol to foster the growth of new cells and hormones, excess cholesterol builds up along the walls of your arteries. This can lead to restricted blood flow, which can lead to a heart attack or stroke.

The main method of managing cholesterol is through your diet. Foods made from animal products contain cholesterol. Limit your amount of red meat and eggs in your diet.

Starting your day off by eating a nutritious breakfast is an easy way of managing cholesterol. Studies have shown that people who eat breakfast have lower cholesterol than those who skip it. This may be due to the heart-healthy breakfast options, such as oatmeal, that can actually help to reduce cholesterol. Eating a proper breakfast also reduces your urge to snack on unhealthy options like doughnuts later in the morning.

Another approach for managing cholesterol is to eat smaller portions throughout the day instead of eating three large meals. Studies have suggested that eating large meals releases large amounts of insulin in the body, which in turn increases production of an enzyme that increases the production of cholesterol. Eating healthy throughout the day also reduces the temptation to reach for high fat snacks such as potato chips.

Exercise is another effective method for managing cholesterol. For people looking to maintain cholesterol levels, you should get 30 minutes of moderate exercise every day. A greater amount of exercise is required if you are looking to lower your cholesterol levels. You should be performing three to four hours a week of walking, swimming, or cycling. Over a period of three to four months, your overall cholesterol will be cut by as much as 20 percent.

By watching your weight through diet and exercise, you’ll find managing cholesterol to be simple and even enjoyable.
